Water is heavy — about 62 pounds per cubic foot — and when it builds up behind a wall, it creates hydrostatic pressure that no wall can hold back forever.
What Is Hydrostatic Pressure?
Hydrostatic pressure is the force water exerts against the back of your wall when it has nowhere to go. Every rain adds more water. If the backfill is clay or compacted soil, the water sits there instead of draining through. Over time, that pressure pushes the wall outward, causing it to lean, crack, or collapse.
What Proper Drainage Looks Like
A properly drained wall has three key components:
- Free-draining backfill: Gravel or crushed stone behind the wall that lets water flow down quickly.
- Perforated drainage pipe: A pipe at the base of the wall that collects water and carries it out.
- Outlet: A daylight outlet or tie-in to a storm system so water can actually leave the wall.
Signs Your Wall Has Drainage Problems
- Water seeping through the wall face
- Soggy soil or standing water at the base
- Wall leaning or bulging
- Cracks widening after heavy rain
- Efflorescence or staining on the wall surface
Drainage Is the First Thing I Check
When I inspect a failing wall, drainage is always the first suspect. In many cases, a wall that looks ruined can be stabilized by addressing the water behind it. In other cases, the wall has to be rebuilt — but the new wall must be built with drainage from day one, or the same failure will happen again.
