If you've ever dug a hole in North Georgia, you know the soil: thick, red, and sticky when wet. Why Red Clay Is Hard on Walls
Red clay is dense and low-permeability. When water gets in, it stays in. During wet periods, the clay swells and pushes against the wall. During dry spells, it contracts and can leave voids behind the wall. That cycle of swelling and shrinking creates movement that weakens the structure over time.
What We Do Differently in Georgia
- Remove clay from behind the wall: We don't backfill with native clay. We use free-draining gravel that lets water escape.
- Install drainage pipe: A perforated drain pipe at the base of the wall is essential, not optional.
- Compact the base course: Red clay can be soft and unstable. We dig down to firm soil and build a strong base.
- Account for expansion: Taller walls may need geogrid reinforcement to handle the extra pressure from swelling clay.
Seasonal Rain Makes It Worse
Georgia gets heavy rain in spring and fall, often after long dry periods. That sudden saturation is when poorly built walls fail. A wall that looked fine in July can start leaning in October. Proper drainage is the difference between a wall that survives the seasons and one that doesn't.
Hire a Contractor Who Knows Georgia Soil
